Governing Body Statement of Behaviour principles

The Department for Education requires governing bodies of maintained schools to publish a statement of behaviour principles for their school. The Governing Body therefore has a duty to produce, and review, a written statement of general principles to guide the Headteacher in determining measures to promote good behaviour and discipline amongst pupils. The document ‘Behaviour and Discipline in Schools – Guidance for Governing Bodies’ (DFE – January 2016) has been used as a reference in producing this Statement of Behaviour Principles.

Potten End CE Primary School is an inclusive school. We are committed to eliminating discrimination and promoting respect, fairness and social inclusion. These are the principles underlying the school’s Positive behaviour policy. We are committed to improving outcomes for our children and staff and to promoting good relations across the whole school community. We recognise the importance of applying these principles to behaviour both in school and online.

Our behaviour principles are underpinned by our school vision of Rooted in faith, we nurture grow and flourish (Matthew 4:30-32)

    • Every pupil understands they have the right to feel safe, valued and respected, and learn free from the disruption of others. (be ready, be respectful, be safe) 3. All pupils, staff and visitors are free from any form of discrimination.
    • Staff and volunteers set an excellent example to pupils at all times.
    • Rewards and consequences are used consistently by staff, in-line with the positive behaviour policy.
    • The positive behaviour policy is understood by pupils, parents and staff.
    • The behaviour policy explains that exclusions will only be used as a last resort, and outlines the processes involved in permanent and fixed-term exclusions.
    • Pupils are helped to take responsibility for their actions: restorative conversations are used to support this.
    • Families are involved in behaviour incidents to foster good relationships between the school and pupils’ home life
