Judo Competition

by school on October 7, 2016

Over the weekend of 1st October 2016, brothers Travis (Year 6) and Jordan (Year 3), fought in a judo competition for under 12’s held in Bruges, Belgium.

For the past few years, Rush Judo Club (where the boys train) has been invited to take part in this longstanding annual event, which is at a fairly high standard, and quite brutal at times. Two competitors had to be stretchered off during the event! A small group of up and coming youngsters are chosen to represent the club and this was Travis’ second invitation and Jordan’s first, being the first year that under 8’s were included. Jordan was one of only two from the club who participated.

Both boys did themselves and the club proud – stepping up on the mat – where it counted. Travis had three hard fights and one of the first set of competitors for the day. Never giving up, even after losing the first fight – he turned around a potential loss to a resounding win in the second fight and ended on a high with a strong finish for the third one. Well done Travis, a well earned Silver medal!

Jordon also had three fights. In Belgium they leave the little ones to fight right at the end of the competition – so it was a long day of watching everyone else fight before Jordan and Sophie had their turn. As you can imagine, both were extremely nervous by this point – but from the time they stepped onto the mat, both looked right at home. Jordan won his first two fights with Ipons and would have had a third had he not misunderstood the referee, and let go of his opponent. The fight lasted to the end of the 1.5 minutes with Jordan taking it all in his stride to beat his opponent, a head and shoulders taller than himself, as if it was a normal practice night at the club.

Great judo from both youngsters – ending with two Golds to add to the club’s final tally of nine Golds, five Silvers and four Bronze.
